We see and feel it every day: workers who can no longer afford the city they build, young people who cannot leave their parents' home, tenants pushed out of their neighbourhoods after renovation, empty buildings while people sleep on the street. The current housing market is putting profit over people and the planet.
It does not have to be this way. The buildings exist, just like the solutions to make them accessible, livable and affordable. What is missing are the rules to fix it: convert vacancy, boost renovation, keep people in their homes, stop speculation, guarantee long-term affordability, invest sustainably – and an EU Housing Agency to coordinate it all.
This is a European Citizens' Initiative – a democratic instrument that allows EU citizens to put a topic on the EU's political agenda and demand action. If 1 million people across the EU sign – better more – the European Commission is obliged to respond. Signature collection starts in September 2026.
